Organized by the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled and sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Annual Swimming Championships for the Disabled was successfully held on Saturday afternoon of 23 July, 2016 at the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool.

The Hong Kong Blind Sports Federation has sent four visually impaired swimmers and volunteers to participate in the event.   At 11 a.m. the swimmers and volunteers were preparing themselves for the competition at the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool.  The race started at 2 p.m. and ended at 7 p.m.  The competition events included:  freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and floating board.  Awards would be given to the first three positions of each event and there was also a championship for all events.

On that afternoon the atmosphere was good.  The coach, volunteers and the audience were cheering for the swimmers.  Everyone was watching intensely for the race which ended after 4 hours.

Our visually impaired swimmers, Ms Chong Sim Fung and Ms Chiang Chung Ying won a gold medal and a silver medal respectively in the 25-metre freestyle competition.

This kind of swimming championship not only enhances the self-confidence of our visually impaired athletes but also helps them gain more competition experience. We would like to see all our visually impaired athletes, through systematic training and more open competition experiences, to become a better athlete.
