Run 2gether 2017

On 22 October, 2017 (Sunday), the students of the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the University of Hong Kong co-organised with the Hong Kong Blind Sports Federation a charity run named “Run 2gether" which was held at the Sham Shui Po Sports Ground from 9 am to 1 pm. Through the relay run, it provided an opportunity for the sighted and the visually impaired to increase mutual understanding and to promote a spirit of loving care and acceptance of others.

On that occasion, we were honoured to have the presence of Mr. Ma Shek Lam, Assistant Commissioner for Rehabilitation of the Labour and Welfare Bureau, to present prizes to the winners. Other officiating guests included: Ms Leung Ying Suet, Hong Kong 10 km fastest runner; Mr Chau Tak Wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Blind Sports Federation and Ms Tam Mei Ling, Senior Course Director of SPACE of the University of Hong Kong

A total of 8 teams participated in the relay race. Each team consisted of 11 persons (5 pairs of runners + 1 captain). At least 9 people were required to take part in the run (in which case two persons had to run twice). Each sighted runner was asked to wear 5 different goggles simulating 5 different causes of visually impairment to run. Led by a sighted guide, each runner needed to run 400 metres, in other words, a total of 2,000 metres in each relay run and a total of 16,000 metres for 8 pairs of runners per team to complete the race.

The competition was particularly intense than the usual marathon as each team could see how far other teams had run on the sports ground, so the competition was fiercer.  In the end, the visually impaired runners of HKBSF won the game.  All participants hoped to meet with their teammates again next year to spend yet another healthy and happy weekend together.
