This year, HKBSF organized a delegation of 31 visually impaired athletes and 38 sighted guide runners to participate in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon held on 16th February.  Five of them took part in the full marathon, 8 in half marathon, while others chose the 10-kilometre run, for promoting the concept of “equal participation and sports for all”.

Although it was the sixth year HKBSF took part in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, the enthusiasm and excitement of our athletes were still going strong once they gathered at the starting point.  At the latter part of the race, it started to rain.  However, the well-trained and experienced athletes and sighted guide runners were not affected by the chilly wind and rain and lower temperature of about 12 degree.  Instead, they continued to run smoothly to the finishing point.

The coach, Mr. Ng Tsz Wai and Assistant Coach, Mr. Ng Tsz Fung, waited at the finishing point for several hours, just to watch our athletes crossing the line and cheering to support them. They also discussed the results and how to improve athletes’ performances. Clearly, the coaches paid high attention to every athlete and sighted guide runner, hoping that they would make better progress each time.

Many of our visually impaired runners finished the race with their best personal time. Among all visually impaired runners, Gary Leung was the first to cross the line using 3 hours and 25 minutes. Half Marathon runner Lam Wing Shun, finished in 1 hour and 51 minutes. While Chan Fai Ming, 10-kilometer runner, accomplished his task within 59 minutes.

We were honoured to have the participation of our Founding Chairman, Mr Peter Sun and his friend’s at this event. They even cheered for our athletes when running, which made the atmosphere even more exciting.
Except for practising hard, the support and guidance of the coaches a group of enthusiastic sighted guide runners also contributed to their success.  The sighted guide runners came from different backgrounds, including teachers, students, corporate volunteers, firemen and elite athletes. In order to better cooperate with the visually impaired runners, they intensively trained with them under varying weather conditions.

Through marathon training, we sincerely hope that every visually impaired athlete and sighted guide runner will cultivate a higher morale, perseverance and unyielding learning attitude to compose a richer life.
