2014 ISPS HANDA Australian Blind Golf Open Championships ReportAccompanied by our golf coach, Mr. Tong Yuet Shing, Mr. Steve Wong had taken part in the captioned event from 8 to 18 May, 2014.
According to Steve, over 50 blind golfers, plus caddies, from 14 countries participated in the bi-annua championships. Steve was thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the world championships, learned a world class golf tournament and met lots of great blind golfers.
As a result of the above tournament, we realise that we may need to improve in the following areas:
a) Golf Course Practice
At present, we have regular driving range practice with on field practice once a year. This training arrangement may not be ideal. Without on golf course field training, it is difficult for our blind golfers to master the skills in short range shots as well as putting, handling variety of hazards such as bunkers and unable to keep track of their progress by scores.
b) Participation in qualifying round of golf event
At present, IBGA has exempted us the requirement every time so that we can take part in the tournaments. From now on, we should consider to organize or attend certain number of golf events so that our blind golfers can meet up with the international standard. If the cost of sending caddies abroad is one of the constraints, we could consider hiring caddies abroad to save transportation and accommodation costs though this may not be the best arrangement.
c) Development of golf handicap records
To meet the requirement of attending international tournaments, we have to
develop the handicap records for our blind golfers so that we are not being singled out in international golf events. Contacts will be made with the Hong Kong Golf Club first to become their corporate member and then apply for a handicap card for each of our blind golfers.
Action is being taken to improve in the above areas.
